Description

“Violence is rarely instantaneous. It usually follows a predictable path. The earlier you recognise that path, the more options you have to change the outcome”.

First Contact is the foundation workshop of the InDefence training system.

Rather than viewing violence as a single event, this workshop explores it as a timeline of escalating behaviour. Through the analogy of a face-to-face social interaction that gradually becomes argumentative, aggressive and ultimately violent, participants learn to identify the critical moments where better decisions and practical skills can prevent the situation from escalating further.

Throughout the workshop you’ll develop a clear understanding of how conflict evolves and the options available at every stage of the encounter.

Topics include:

  • Understanding the timeline of aggression and recognising early warning signs.
  • Practical communication skills to reduce tension and discourage escalation.
  • Maintaining reactionary gaps and managing personal space.
  • Responding to sudden changes in proximity and pre-assault indicators.
  • Practical responses to pointing, pushing, grabbing, striking and choking.
  • Tactical movement and withdrawal strategies when escape is possible.
  • Controlling an aggressor’s ability to cause harm when disengagement isn’t immediately available.
  • Understanding when immediate defensive action may become necessary and the legal and tactical principles that support those decisions.
  • Practical Krav Maga solutions to common violent unarmed assaults.

This workshop is designed specifically for beginners and requires no previous martial arts or self-defence experience. Every concept is taught using simple, practical principles that can be understood quickly and applied immediately.

By the end of the workshop, participants won’t simply know what to do—they’ll understand why violence escalates, howto interrupt that process, and when different options become appropriate. The result is greater confidence, better judgement under pressure, and practical skills that can help keep you and those around you safer.
